Social Movements in Vietnam – Networking in Cyber Space?

This paper explores the potential for the development of collective action and the formation of social movements in Vietnam. Castells (2012: 11) argues that the development of ‘hybrid spaces’ that are in between the online and offline worlds is important for the establishment of social movements. They facilitate the production of public spaces in which citizens can freely deliberate. Against this background the paper examines citizens’ multiple claims towards the state in Vietnam and their communicative practices to reach their objectives.
