The translation of Personal Pronouns from German into Vietnamese in “Siegfried und Kriemhild” and “Dích Frit và Krim Hin”

Translation is an activity whereby the language of the source text is transferred into the language of the target text with the same meaning. Based on the theory of translation, this article discusses the way that personal pronouns were translated from German into Vietnamese in the text “Siegfried und Kriemhild”, a work by Franz Fühmann, and its translation “Dích Frit và Krim Hin” by Pham Khac Toan. The results show the differences between the two languages in terms of linguistic expressions and how they were chosen to appear in various contexts throughout the work. Specifically, the number of elements selected to appear is different from each other which leads to the difference on the shade of meaning. On the other hand, the variation in the use of personal pronouns depending on context is also an interesting aspect that is emphasized in this work. The results of this study can be of benefit for teaching foreign languages in general and for teaching German in particular.
